Emergency Overview:
odorless, clear, nonvolatile liquid. Extremely Corrosive!
causes severe burns on contact. Can cause blindness, permanent
scarring and death. Aerosols can cause lung injury, effects
may be delayed. Highly reactive. Can react violently with
water and numerous commonly encountered materials, generating
enough heat to ignite and near by combustible materials.
Contact with many organic and inorganic chemicals may
cause fire or explosion. Reacts with some metal to liberate
hydrogen gas, which can form explosive mixtures with air.
Will not burn. Toxic to aquatic organism.
First
Aid Measures:
Inhalation:
Move victim to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, oxygen
may be beneficial if administered by trained personnel,
preferably on a doctors advice.
Skin
Contact:
Immediately flush skin with running water for a minimum
of 20 minutes and upward to 60 minutes is recommended.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is alert and convulsing,
rinse mouth and give as much water as possible to dilute
material (8 to 10 oz)
Fire
and Explosion Hazards:
Sodium Hydroxide will not burn or support combustion.
Extinguishing
Media: Use extinguishing media suitable for surrounding
fire.
